Tikkun Olam: Making A Difference

No, this is the fast I desire: To unlock fetters of wickedness, and untie the cords of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free, to break off every yoke. (Isaiah 58:6) The Torah teaches that to fast simply for the act of fasting is not enough; one fasts as a reminder of the need to improve oneself and the lives of those around you.

There are many ways to get involved in the greater Atlanta Area as well as volunteering here at TKE.

TKE Welcome Team

Start off the New Year by performing the mitzvah of welcoming guests! We need warm greeters throughout the High Holy Day services. Your willingness to assist our congregants in having a meaningful experience at Temple Kol Emeth is most appreciated!

Please complete the Welcome Team form HERE.

"Reverse Tashlich"

Reverse Tashlich is an innovative  approach to Jewish environmental stewardship. In the ritual of Tashlich on Rosh HaShanah, we go to a body of water and symbolically cast our "sins" into the water to begin the New Year with a clean heart. With Reverse Tashlich, we’re turning symbolism into action by removing human "sin" from the water.

TKE will be participating in the Great Lake Allatoona Clean Up on Saturday, September 27 from 9:00am-2:00pm. There is also an option to add camping on Friday night and/or Saturday night.

Bring a packed lunch and water. Gloves and trash bags will be provided.

Amy Bryson, TKE VP of Community Relations is organizing our group. Please RSVP to her, not via the organizer's website. Email amybryson1@gmail.com to express interest, and she will be in touch with details.

Isaiah Hour on Yom Kippur Afternoon

TKE's Tikkun Olam Team brings the entire congregation an opportunity to do good! Following Yom Kippur services, Isaiah Hour will be a chance for you to participate in a variety of "helping" activities - writing letters to home-bound seniors, painting a mural that will be hung in the children's wing of a hospital, crafting for veterans, and more. There will be activities for participants of all ages.

The event runs from 1:00pm - 3:30pm. Stay for an hour or the entire time, your efforts will be appreciated by others. More details to follow.

JF&CS Community Food Drive

A food collection has become common for Jewish communities on Yom Kippur - we give food to those in need just as we choose to refain from eating food. This year we are hearing that the need is greater than ever.

For the High Holy Days, we support the JF&CS Kosher Food Pantry and its efforts to assist those in the Jewish community experiencing food insecurity.  There are two ways to give:

  1. Bring requested food items to TKE and drop them in the barrels in our lobby.
  2. Donate funds that allow the Kosher Food Pantry to purchase what they need.

As more information is made available, we will post it here.
